Spy Shots: 2011 Infiniti QX56 caught on show

The 2011 Infiniti QX56 went on display in the Middle East and some stealthy soul caught a couple of close-up pics from the front and rear three-quarter. It's a much smoother vehicle than the one it replaces, ditching the arcs for hard angles. It also sheds finicky styling cues like the current vehicle's slightly contorted C-pillar arrangement, going for an uninterrupted window line rimmed by a chrome strip. Head on, though, it's grille-tastic.

Body elements like flaring arches are more integrated, and the chrome strip running down the side has been omitted. The rear is an FX-ified version of the new Nissan Patrol, and the package rides on a nice set of Infiniti's trademark wheels. We aren't sure if it will turn the QX56's sales numbers around, but stranger things have happened...

New Infiniti M Luxury Sedan to get Virtual Preview at Pebble Beach

Infiniti, it has emerged, is getting ready to unveil the replacement for its flagship M series sedan (current version pictured above) at the upcoming Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. But though the Monterey venue has become a popular alternative venue to debut new luxury cars – case in point Infiniti's choice to unveil the new G37 coupe there last year – the new M's will be anything but business as usual. Projecting a rendered image of the car onto a static clay model, Nissan's luxury division will be using "virtual video mapping", giving the company a chance to showcase its technological abilities as well as the design of its new top-of-the-line luxury sedan before the final car is even ready. As an added bonus, Infiniti will reportedly broadcast the "debut" on its website, giving those of us stuck at home away from the glitz and glamor of Pebble Beach a chance to get in on the action. Should Infiniti bring back the Q45? Or is there a better solution?

It doesn't seem so long ago when Infiniti came out of the gate with the original Q45. I remember seriously considering it before I decided on the original Lexus LS400. At the time, it was the BMW of the two vehicles because performance was emphasized more than luxury. It had great performance and build quality but I could not warm up to the exterior design. And once Lexus had the lead, Infiniti has been trying to play catch up ever since.

But no matter what they do, it doesn’t seem like they have had the right recipe to seriously get back in the game. The Q has always been good, just not good enough. So the buzz over the last few years is should they or will they ever bring back a Q45? The question is if they can make money after they invest so much to do a new vehicle? And is there a market for them with all the others in the space. Maybe we have a better idea for them. Why not do what BMW did in China? How about a long wheelbase M45 instead of a Q? Call it the M50L and put the most powerful engine in it and load it up with great features and interior quality, compared to the competition. A lot less development cost and then they would have a product that no one else has in the USA so they could own the market, and you could undercut the price of the LS and the others.

The question remains if Infiniti will actually bring their flagship back…
